Songs of Travel part I
World premiere of Djuro Zivkovic's "Concerto Terrae", Andrea Tarrodi's "Birds of Paradise" and more with Gävle Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simon Crawford-Phillips
19:00
21:00

This year we are proud to be part of the EU project Songs of Travel, which explores themes of migration and travel through music, research and interactive experiences. Together with three other festivals and a game developer, we have commissioned five new musical works and also created a mobile game that follows the lives and journeys of five migrants across Europe. Travel and impressions from other places and contexts are the common thread that binds the festival's program. The opening concert will feature the premiere of one of the five works, Djuro Zivkovic's Double Concerto for cello, piano and orchestra.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Edvard Grieg' s beloved Peer Gynt Suite is based on Henrik Ibsen's dramatic tale of the adventurous Peer Gynt who travels the world but loses himself in his lies and dreams. Searching for love, wealth and meaning, he finally realizes that he has neglected the only thing that matters: the faithful Solveig waiting for him at home.

Djuro Zivkovic's Concerto Terrae, double concerto for cello, piano and orchestra is one of the works commissioned for Songs of Travel. Serbian-Swedish Zivkovic has won several international prizes and awards for his original and expressive music, including the Grawemeyer Award, often likened to the Nobel Prize of art music.

"In the double concert, I want to evoke a sense of wonder and awe, evoking the paradoxical nature of our planet - a fragile yet resilient sphere suspended in the vastness of space. Themusic will evoke a sense of the sacred and invite the listener to contemplate their place in the grand design of the universe." - Djuro Zivkovic

When Andrea Tarrodi wrote Birds of Paradise, she was listening to a record of bird sounds and was inspired to write the piece after watching a nature film about these beautiful and unusual creatures. She wrote the piece for Musica Vitae, which premiered it in 2008.

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Symphony No 4 'The Italian ' is one of his most popular and life-affirming works. Mendelssohn himself referred to the symphony as 'the happiest piece I have ever written'. It was written after traveling around Italy and being fascinated by its culture, history and landscape, and he sought to capture the colors and atmosphere of the country in his music. The symphony has four movements: Allegro vivace, Andante con moto, Con moto moderato and a final wild Saltarello. The symphony was first performed in London in 1833, but Mendelssohn was not satisfied with it and revised it several times. Never published during his lifetime, it was only released in its original version in 1851 and immediately became a firm favorite in the orchestral repertoire!
