Fairplay Chamber Music was founded in 2017, then under the name Järna Festival Academy, with a clear vision of what it should be:
- a chamber music festival and a summer academy with the right conditions to achieve the highest possible artistic quality, both for students and visiting artists.
- a progressive festival driven by modern values regarding, among other things, climate, environment and gender equality.
- an activity where the artistic content acts as a positive force for people and society, using music, art and science to contribute to deepening and discussion of the topics that define our time.
The scope and design of the festival is constantly changing, partly to avoid getting stuck in old ruts and partly to be able to quickly act on new ideas and conditions.
Since its inception, sustainability work has developed and increasingly come to define the activities. It is not only at the forefront but has also become something that other actors seek help with - for example through the EU-funded project
Songs of Travelin which Fairplay Chamber Music 2024, together with Cellissimo/Music for Galway, Valdres Sommersymfoni and Piano Biennale and the game developing studio Causa Creations, is putting sustainability in focus both on stage and in planning. In Songs of Travel, Fairplay Chamber Music has a leading role in creating a climate policy that other festivals can use. Of course, this policy must be rooted in research, which is why it is being developed in collaboration with researchers at the University of Galway in Ireland. The long-term collaboration with
Valdres Summer Symphonywhich began in 2022, provides not only climate benefits but also artistic and economic benefits.
