Can festivals influence their artists - and their audiences - to live in a more sustainable way? The answer was sought in the transnational project Songs of Travel, which aimed to raise awareness and promote empathy for climate change and migration through music. Fairplay Chamber Music collaborated with Ireland's Cellissimo/Music for Galway, Norway's Valdres Summer Symphony, the Dutch Piano Biënnale and the Austrian recording studio Causa Creations, as well as with climate scientists from the University of Galway. The result was five commissioned works by composers Hawar Tawfiq, Djuro Zivkovic, Lasse Thoresen, Elaine Agnew and Karmit Fadael, a mobile game, educational materials for schools, a green policy for music festivals and a report on sustainability in music. The idea was that the results of the project would benefit the entire industry and stimulate greater responsibility for our common future.
